[Sagot para sa’yo] THE AGED MOTHERby Matsuo Basho This Japanese folktale tells the story of an unkind ruler who issues cruel orders, including one demand that all old folks are to be abandoned and left to die. Basho tells a touching story about a mother and her son and their love for one another. Long ago in the province of Shining, a poor farmer and his aged, widowed mother lived at the foot of the mountain. It was governed by a despotic leader who, though a tough warrior, was afraid of his failing health and strength. This fear led him to send out a proclamation to kill all aged people. Those were barbarous days, and the custom of abandoning old people to die was common. The poor farmer, who loved his aged mother, was filled with sorrow. But no one ever thought twice about obeying the mandate of the governor, so the young man prepared for what was then considered the kindest mode of death. At sundown after his work, he packed unwhitened rice and water, the poor's staple, for his journey. Carrying his helpless mother on his back, he started up the long, steep road to Obatsuyama, the mountain of the “abandoning of the aged.” Despite her failing sight, the old mother quietly marked their trail with twigs, ensuring the return path was visible. Reaching the summit, the son tenderly arranged a comfortable spot for his mother's final rest. With tearful eyes and a heavy heart, he bid her farewell. The trembling mother’s voice was full of unselfish love as she gave her last demand. “Let your eyes not be blinded, my son.” She said, “The mountain road is full of dangers. Look carefully and follow the path which holds the piles of twigs. They will guide you to the familiar path farther down.” The son’s surprised eyes looked back over the path, then at his poor old mother, shriveled hands all scratched and soiled by their work of love. Overwhelmed by her care and sacrifice, the son vowed to stay by her side, facing whatever fate together. Once again, the son carried his aged mother, now seemingly lighter, and hastened back down the path, through the little hut in the valley. Hiding his mother in a walled closet beneath the kitchen floor, he provided for her needs while continually watching and fearing she would be discovered. Just as he began to feel a sense of safety, the despotic governor issued another unreasonable order: a demand for a rope of ashes. The entire province was trembling, as they were tasked with an impossible demand for a rope of ashes by the governor, a son seeks his mother's advice. After careful consideration, she devises a plan. “Make rope from twisted straw, burn it on windless night upon a row of flat stones.” The son called all the people and did what his mother plan. The perfect rope of ashes remains. The governor was impressed and the farmer humbly shared his story and inquired about the source of wisdom. Reflecting on the lesson, the governor abolished the cruel law, recognizing the value of wisdom with age. Thus, a brutal custom fade into legend as a new era dawn.find the Exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax , falling action, conclusion, and conflict
