[Sagot para sa’yo] Short Story: "The Mystery of the Missing Cake" Lily and her brother Jack were planning a surprise birthday party for their mother. They spent the whole afternoon baking a delicious chocolate cake, decorating it with bright frosting, and adding a few sprinkles on top. Once the cake was ready, they left it on the kitchen counter to cool while they prepared the rest of the party. Lily and Jack decorated the living room with balloons and streamers. They wrapped a present and hid it under the couch. When everything was ready, they went back to the kitchen to check on the cake. But when they arrived, the cake was gone! Lily looked around the kitchen in confusion. "Did you move the cake?" she asked Jack. Jack shook his head. "No, I didn't touch it. Where could it be?" They searched high and low, but there was no sign of the cake. Just then, they heard a faint noise coming from the backyard. They hurried outside and found their dog, Max, sitting under a tree with chocolate frosting on his nose and a very guilty expression on his face. "Max!" Lily exclaimed. "Did you eat the cake?" Max wagged his tail sheepishly, as if to say, "Maybe." Lily and Jack couldn't help but laugh. Their surprise party was now missing the main attraction, but they knew their mother would understand. They decided to make some quick cookies instead and had just enough time to bake them before she came home. When their mother walked in and saw the decorations, she was overjoyed. And when Lily and Jack told her what happened to the cake, she laughed and hugged them both. "It's the thought that counts," she said with a smile. "And these cookies look just as delicious!" HOTS Questions: Making Inferences 1. Why do you think Max ate the cake? What clues in the story suggest this? 2. What can you infer about Lily and Jack's reaction when they discovered Max had eaten the cake? 3. Why do you think their mother said, "It's the thought that counts"? What does this tell you about her character? 4. If you were in Lily and Jack's situation, how might you have felt when you discovered the cake was missing? Explain your reasoning. 5.
