1. Examples of structural dilemmas:a) Excessive autonomy versus excessive interdependence – A good example is in a family. If a child is given too much freedom without guidance, they might make poor decisions. On the other hand, if the family is too controlling, the child cannot learn independence. Balance is needed.b) Flexibility versus strict adherence to rules – During the pandemic, schools had strict rules on attendance in online classes. Some students had poor internet connection, and being too strict made them fail. Flexibility, like allowing recorded submissions, helped students still learn.c) Gap versus overlap – In government offices, sometimes there is a gap when no one is assigned to a certain responsibility, while in other cases, two offices overlap in doing the same work which causes confusion and delay.d) Differentiation versus integration – In hospitals, doctors have their own specialties (differentiation), but during surgery they need to work together with nurses and other staff (integration).e) Centralized versus decentralized decision making – In schools, sometimes only the principal makes the decision (centralized), but in student activities, decisions are better when shared with teachers and student leaders (decentralized).f) Sovereignty of nations versus world peace and order – A nation may insist on its right to use natural resources as it wants, but international groups might ask it to follow agreements to protect the environment for the sake of world peace and order.‎ 2. Structural dilemmas in events:a) Mamasapano Encounter (SAF 44) – Reports said one of the main causes of the tragedy was poor coordination between forces. The SAF went in with autonomy, but they lacked interdependence with the military, which led to the loss of 44 lives.b) Bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima – This showed the dilemma of sovereignty of nations versus world peace. The U.S. believed bombing would end the war quickly, but it caused massive deaths and long-term suffering.c) Red tape in government offices – This shows flexibility versus strict rules. Too many steps and signatures delay services, when sometimes simpler and faster processes would better serve people.d) Creation of ARMM – This is an example of autonomy versus integration. ARMM was made to give more self-governance to the Muslim region, but at the same time, it still has to work together with the Philippine government.‎ 3. “Man is not made for the Sabbath. The Sabbath is made for man.”This reminds us that rules should serve people, not the other way around. When faced with a dilemma between strict rules and flexibility, I should choose what will help people the most in their situation. Rules are important, but they should not harm or burden people when they are meant to protect and guide them[tex].[/tex]
