[Subject-ETHICS]Please read the three (3) CASE ANALYSIS written below and answer the following questions.  Situation No. 1: Christian had several friends including Mike and David. Mike has recently met and started dating a wonderful lady named Ivana. He is convinced this is a long-term relationship. Unknown to mike, Christian observed them at a restaurant several days ago and realized that Ivana is the girlfriend of his other friend David. Christian is deciding whether to tell mike that Ivana is in a relationship when he receives a call from David.  David suspects his girlfriend has another relationship and since they and Christian share many friends and contacts, he asks if Christian has heard anything regarding a relationship. QUESTION: 1. To whom does Christian owe greater friendship to in this situation? No matter who he tells, he is going to end up hurting one, if not both friends. Justify. 2. Does he remain silent and hope his knowledge is never discovered? Explain.  Situation No. 2: Amanda has been caring for four-year-old Jamie for the past six months. While Jamie is a great kid, when things don’t go his way he gets really angry. He throws things and can be destructive. It’s getting to the point that Amanda feels she is ignoring the other children while trying to handle Jamie. Amanda has been trying to be consistent in her discipline of Jamie, but she’s starting to wonder if she should ask his parents to find another place for him. What should Amanda do? QUESTION: 1. In your own words, identify what you think is the main concern, issue, or problem in this situation? 2. To whom do you have responsibilities? Whom and what do you have to consider in making a decision? Situation No. 3:   In Europe a woman was near death from a special kind of cancer. There was one drug that doctors thought might save her. It was a form of radium that a druggist in the same town had recently discovered. The drug was expensive to make, but the druggist was charging ten times what the drug cost to make. He paid $200 for the radium and charged $2,000 for a small dose of the drug. The sick woman's husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money, but he could only get together about $1,000, which is half of what it cost. He told the druggist that his wife was dying, and asked him to sell it cheaper or let him pay later. But the druggist said, "No, I discovered the drug and I'm going to make money on it." So Heinz got desperate and began to think about breaking into the man's store to steal the drug for his wife. Should Heinz steal the drug?QUESTIONS: 1. What factors are involved in each person’s decision about whether or not Heinz should steal the drug? 2. What potential consequences does Heinz face if he does decide to steal the drug? Are these consequences outweighed by the benefit of saving his wife? 3. What if the sick woman were a stranger? Should Heinz still steal the drug? Why or Why Not?4. What if Heinz doesn’t particularly even like his wife? Should he still steal the drug? 5. Let us pretend that the drug is being stolen to save an animal. Should he steal the drug now?Pa tulong naman po

Answer (1)

Situation No. 1 (Christian, Mike, David, Ivana)1. Christian owes equal friendship to both, but in this case he has a stronger duty to the truth. If he hides it, he becomes part of the deception. He should be honest to David, since David directly asked him, but also careful in explaining to Mike so he will not feel betrayed.2. No. Silence protects the liar (Ivana) but harms both friends. True friendship means honesty even if it hurts. Remaining silent only delays the pain and destroys trust later.Situation No. 2 (Amanda and Jamie)1. The main concern is Jamie’s behavior and how it affects the care of the other children. Amanda feels torn between giving enough attention to Jamie and to the rest of the kids.2. ResponsibilitiesTo Jamie: help him learn self-control and proper behavior. To the other children: ensure they are safe and get fair attention. To Jamie’s parents: inform them honestly about his behavior.Amanda should talk to the parents, suggest possible professional help or support, instead of immediately removing Jamie from her care.Situation No. 3 (Heinz and the drug)1. Factors involvedHeinz: love for his wife, moral struggle, risk of breaking the law.Wife: her right to live.Druggist: right to profit, but also moral duty to save lives.Society: law, fairness, and value of human life.2. Potential consequences for HeinzArrest, jail, loss of reputation. But the benefit is possibly saving his wife’s life. Many would argue life is more valuable than money or law.3. Still morally right to try saving a life, but it is harder to justify risking jail for someone he doesn’t know. Some may argue all lives have equal value, but others would say responsibility is greater to family.4. Even if he doesn’t like her, life is still valuable. The question becomes: does he act out of duty to human life, or just personal feelings? A moral person may still choose to save her.5. Animals deserve care, but in society human life usually takes higher priority. Stealing might not be justified for an animal, especially since laws and values treat human life as more important.
