AbstractThe goal of this study was to investigate the effects of political news consumption and awareness on senior high school students at Gonzalo Gatchalian National Senior High School. Political news is important to young people's understanding of government, policies, and civic engagement given the dramatic increase in media accessibility in our society. The study examines the influence of political news consumption and engagement on students' knowledge of political issues and attitudes towards political participation. This study employed survey questionnaires and focus group discussions to investigate students' preferred sources of political news, their understanding of political news topics, and their feelings about the credibility of the political news. The results of this study provide insight into how well political news consumption informs or biases senior high student's perceptions and attitudes related to political participation. Additionally, results suggest that processes for civic education and media literacy programs in their school community could be affected.IntroductionPolitical news plays a pervasive role in all aspects of life in today's interconnected world, including for youth. Senior high school students are coming into their adult citizenship with an evolving knowledge of political information through traditional mediums such as television, social media, news sites, and informal sharing or conversations by peers and family. As researchers, it is imperative to investigate how political news and news literacy impact students' understanding and perceptions of political information in order to encourage informed and highly-engaged citizens. In its own, small way, Gonzalo Gatchalian National Senior High School is a representation of larger society and an appropriate heuristic to investigate how political news is consumed and understood by youth. The proposed research seeks to measure how exposure to political news behaves with senior high students' political knowledge and political attitudes. This study will examine the questions: What forms of political news do students primarily consume? How does political news alter students' understandings of government and political processes? How much do students trust their political information? The purpose of the research will be a contribution to the educational framework needed to promote critical thinking and responsible citizenship before students leave senior high school.A BLESSED SUNDAY EVERYONEKINDLY LIKE AND FOLLOW
