Moses and the Jews – SummaryA long time ago, the Jewish people (Israelites) were living in Egypt, but they were treated as slaves by the Pharaoh. They were forced to work hard and had no freedom. One day, Pharaoh gave an order to kill all Hebrew baby boys because he feared the Jews would grow too strong. But one baby, Moses, was saved by his mother. She placed him in a basket and let it float on the Nile River. The Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby and adopted him, raising him as a prince of Egypt. When Moses grew up, he saw an Egyptian mistreating a Hebrew slave. In anger, Moses defended the slave and killed the Egyptian. Afraid of punishment, he ran away to the desert, where he lived as a shepherd.Years later, God appeared to Moses in the form of a burning bush that did not burn out. God told Moses to go back to Egypt and free His people from slavery.Moses returned to Egypt and, with his brother Aaron, told Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. Pharaoh refused, so God sent ten plagues to Egypt (such as turning the Nile into blood, swarms of locusts, and the death of the firstborn). After the final plague, Pharaoh finally let the Jews go.Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt in what is called the Exodus. But Pharaoh changed his mind and chased them. God parted the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to cross safely. When the Egyptians tried to follow, the waters returned and drowned them.In the desert, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, which became the moral and religious laws for the Jews. Moses continued to lead the people toward the Promised Land, though he did not enter it himself.
