The Badjao (also spelled Bajau) are an indigenous, nomadic sea-faring ethnic group native to the southwestern Philippines, particularly in areas such as Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, Sulu, and some coastal parts of Mindanao. They are often called "Sea Gypsies" because of their traditional lifestyle of living on boats or stilt houses over the water and their deep connection to the sea as expert fishermen, divers, and pearl gatherers. The Badjao culture revolves around maritime skills, including free-diving for pearls and fishing with spears. Historically, many lived entirely on houseboats before some settled on stilt villages near fertile fishing grounds. They have a rich oral tradition and are closely related to the Sama people but are distinct in their sea-based way of life.
