The first computer in the Philippines was an IBM 650, installed in 1958 at the Bureau of Lands, where it was used for statistical computations and land survey purposes. This marked the beginning of computer technology use in the country by government agencies. Following this, in the 1960s, the University of the Philippines established its own computer center, further advancing academic engagement with computing. Before this period, the Philippines did have tabulating machines (electromechanical devices) since the early 20th century, used by businesses and government, but the IBM 650 in 1958 was the first recognized computer installation in the country.
