The lymphatic system is a part of the immune system and also works with the circulatory system to maintain fluid balance and protect the body from infection. It consists of a network of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and organs like the spleen, thymus, and tonsils.Functions of the lymphatic system:Removes excess fluid from tissues and returns it to the bloodstream.Filters lymph fluid through lymph nodes, where immune cells detect and destroy pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells.Produces and houses white blood cells, especially lymphocytes (B and T cells), which play key roles in immunity.Transports dietary fats from the intestines to the blood through specialized lymph vessels called lacteals.Immune surveillance – Constantly monitors tissues for potential threats.For example, if bacteria enter through a cut in the skin, nearby lymph nodes may swell as immune cells become activated to fight the infection.Without the lymphatic system, fluid would accumulate in tissues (edema), and the body would struggle to detect or eliminate infections. Vaccines, immune responses, and disease resistance all depend heavily on this system.
