Pacific Ring of FireThe Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped zone around the edges of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions happen. It is home to about 75% of the world’s active volcanoes and around 90% of all earthquakes occur here. How Was It Formed? The Ring of Fire was formed by plate tectonics — the movement of large sections of the Earth's crust. The Earth's crust is made up of tectonic plates.Around the Pacific Ocean, many of these plates are colliding, sliding, or sinking beneath each other (subduction). When one plate goes under another, magma rises, creating volcanoes. The intense pressure also causes earthquakes.
