Gravity was the main reason why the solar nebula started to collapse and form the solar system. At first, it was just a large cloud of gas and dust spread out in space. Over time, gravity slowly pulled the particles closer together. Some scientists think a nearby explosion, like a supernova, could have triggered the collapse by disturbing the cloud. As the cloud got pulled in tighter, it began to spin and turned into a flat, rotating disk. Most of the material moved toward the center and formed the Sun, while the rest came together to form the planets, moons, and other parts of the solar system.
