1. What does your floating clay look like? 2. Why do you think this shape of the clay allows it to float in water? 3. Why some design of the clay sank? 4. Why is IT important to make careful observations when testing the diff. shapes of the clay? 5. Instead of modeling clay, what other materials can you use to make diff. shapes and create a floating object that can hold paper clips without sinking? 2

My floating clay looks like a small boat shape with sides lifted up.This shape lets it trap air and spread its weight, so the water can hold it up.Some designs sank because they were too solid and heavy in the middle and didn’t spread out the weight. It’s important to observe carefully so you know which shapes float well and which do not, so you can improve the design. You can use aluminum foil, plastic bottles, or light wood to make floating shapes that can hold paper clips without sinking.
