Although water is a naturally occurring substance and is essential to life, it does not meet all the criteria of a mineral. By definition, a mineral must be naturally occurring, inorganic, solid, have a definite chemical composition, and have a crystalline structure. Water is not a solid at standard temperature and pressure, which disqualifies it from being a mineral. However, when water freezes and becomes ice in nature (like snow or glaciers), it can be classified as a mineral because it then meets the solid-state requirement and forms crystals. So, liquid water is not a mineral, but naturally formed ice is.
