Dr. Antonio de Morga was a Spanish official and historian who lived in the Philippines during the early 1600s. He was considered the only major secular historian in the islands before 1887, giving us a different perspective from religious accounts. His famous work, "Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas" (Events of the Philippine Islands), is one of the earliest and most detailed records of Philippine history from a secular (non-religious) point of view.Key Points:Written in 1609, it documents political, cultural, and social events during the Spanish colonization.Unlike most writers of the time (who were mostly missionaries and priests), Morga wrote as a government official and observer. His work gives valuable insights into Filipino life before and during Spanish colonization.Jose Rizal even annotated (wrote comments on) Morga's book to show how Filipinos had a rich culture before Spain came.
