The idea that an atom is a sphere of positive charge with negatively charged electrons embedded in it describes an early model called the "plum pudding model" proposed by J.J. Thomson. However, this model is outdated.Modern atomic theory shows that an atom has a tiny, dense nucleus at its center containing positively charged protons and neutral neutrons. Around this nucleus, negatively charged electrons move in regions called electron shells or clouds, not embedded in a positive sphere. Most of the atom is actually empty space[tex].[/tex]
