Free-Soilers moved to Kansas to vote to keep slavery out and make Kansas a “free state” where no one could own slaves. By the way, the correct term is free-soilers, not free soldiers.Back in the 1850s, Kansas was like a big battleground because people were arguing about whether it should allow slavery or not. A new law (the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854) said the people living in Kansas could vote to decide: slavery or no slavery. Free-Soilers were folks, mostly from the North, who hated the idea of slavery spreading. They packed up and moved to Kansas to vote “no” on slavery. They wanted Kansas to be a place where people could work for themselves, not be slaves. It was like a big contest: Free-Soilers versus people who wanted slavery (called pro-slavery settlers). The Free-Soilers went to Kansas to make sure their side won the vote. This led to some fighting, called “Bleeding Kansas,” but their efforts helped Kansas become a free state in 1861.
