Ferdinand Magellan was killed on April 27, 1521, during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines. He was defeated by the warriors of Lapu-Lapu, a local chieftain who resisted Spanish colonization. Common belief throughout history was that Lapu-Lapu killed Magellan but there were no historical documents back then nor any accounts that would confirm that he personally wounded the Spaniard. However, it was Lapu-Lapu and his tribal warriors who met Magellan's group at the shores of Mactan.
