Programming languages are basically what let different computer programs talk to each other instead of being completely separate. Like think about when you order food on your phone and the app has to tell the restaurant's system about your order, then talk to your bank to charge your card, then update the delivery tracking, and all that happens because someone wrote code to connect those systems. Without programming languages, developers couldn't build those connections and everything would just be isolated because your phone app couldn't pull data from websites, your smart home devices couldn't work together, and nothing would sync up. It's kind of like having a universal remote that can control your TV, sound system, and lights all at once, except programming languages do that for way more complex stuff across the entire internet.
