The discovery of magnetism dates back to ancient times. The earliest recorded discovery was by the Greeks, around 600 BCE.They found a naturally occurring magnetic mineral called lodestone (a type of magnetite) in a region called Magnesia in ancient Greece — which is where the word magnet comes from.The ancient Chinese also discovered that lodestone could attract iron and used it to make the first primitive compasses around the 2nd century BCE, which helped with navigation.
