Machine Guns (Paraphrased)The belt-fed machine gun used in World War I could fire 600 rounds per minute.  It had a range of over 1,000 yards.  Field artillery and machine guns successfully halted the troops' advance. Guns had been less precise and could shoot a lot fewer shots during the Franco-Prussian War (40 years prior).  It was extremely difficult for generals to lead their troops over the top of the trench and attack the enemy.  They obstinately refused to acknowledge that they were not winning consistently, rendering trench tactics completely futile. As a result, "Lions led by donkeys" was a common way to summarize the conflict. Many contend that it is unjust to the generals, and that statement is still debatable.GASES (Paraphrased)In the face of a well-armed trench, combatants realized that conventional attacks were ineffective. To overcome the enemy's defenses, they started creating new weaponry. For this reason, scientists from both sides produced toxic gasses. Poison gas would be released into the enemy's trenches when the wind was favorable,  dispatching everyone who breathed it in. Soldiers needed gas masks to survive, as shown in a photo of Polish troops during the war. France tried using poison gas in 1914, but it wasn’t until April 1915 that it was used heavily.SUBMARINES (Paraphrased)Submarines represented a major advancement in naval warfare. Germany called these underwater vessels U-boats. When hidden beneath the water's surface, they could detect ships while remaining unseen. These submarines were excellent for spying and surprise attacks. After a German U-boat sank the British cruise ship RMS Lusitania in May 1915, dispatching over 1,000 civilians (including many Americans), the United States became angry but wasn't ready to join the war yet. It took until a few months after the United States entered the war in 1917 for the military to develop a system to communicate with Mexico.TANKS (Paraphrased)Tanks first appeared in World War I, introduced by British forces. They were called "tanks" as a code name in September 1916. The armor on the outside protected soldiers inside from bullets. A tank could roll into a battlefield, allowing soldiers to use the tank's machine gun while being protected. These first World War tanks came better equipped with armor and were used more effectively in battle than earlier versions.AIRCRAFT (Paraphrased)World War I introduced planes as weapons. These early aircraft were used in combat with machine guns and soldiers shooting from them. New Zealand pilots fought in the air for the first time. The famous Zeppelin, a large balloon-like aircraft, could fly very high above the battlefield. Because airplanes were new technology at this time, they were mainly used by enemies to watch troop movements and to release bombs from above.
