CELL THEORYA scientific explanation of what cells are and their significance to life is provided by cell theory.Cell Theory The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in living things. All organisms are made up of one or more cells. Cells arise from other cells through cellular division. The expanded version of the cell theory can also include: Cells carry genetic material passed to daughter cells during cellular division All cells are essentially the same in chemical composition Energy flow (metabolism and biochemistry) occurs within cellsHISTORY OF CELL THEORYAntony van Leeuwenhoek (1600s) - observed the movements of protista (a type of single-celled organism)  and sperm, which he collectively termed “animalcules.” Robert Hooke (1665) – in his publication of his journal Micrographia he coined the term “cell” to describe small organism viewed in cork with a box-like structure. Matthias Schleiden & Theodor Schwann (1830s)- studying tissues and proposed the unified cell theory, and proposed spontaneous generation as the method for cell origination. Rudolf Virchow (19th century) - argued that the idea of spontaneous generation, like the theory of free cell formation that Matthias Schleiden had proposed, must be rejected in pathology. Louis Pasteur (1864) - is credited with conclusively disproving the theory of spontaneous generation with his famous swan-neck flask experiment. He subsequently proposed that “life only comes from life.”
