If a creature's traits change based on its surroundings, and not just its genes, how does evolution, which relies on genes, really work? Does it mean that randomness plays a bigger role than we thought, and how does that affect how creatures adapt over long periods?

However, natural selection helps filter out bad traits and keep the good ones, so even though randomness is involved, it's not completely random in the end. Over time, this process helps creatures adapt to their surroundings, making them more likely to survive and reproduce. It's pretty cool how all these factors work together to shape life on Earth.
