Opinion on the Proposed Charter Change of the 1987 Philippine ConstitutionI disagree with the proposed charter change of the 1987 Philippine Constitution at this time due to the risks of abuse, lack of public trust, and the need for better law enforcement rather than altering the constitution. One major concern is that charter change could be used to extend the terms of politicians in power. The current constitution has safeguards, such as term limits, to prevent the concentration of power. If these are removed or altered, there is a risk that politicians may stay in power indefinitely, weakening democratic institutions.Another issue is the lack of trust in government officials handling the constitutional amendment process. Many Filipinos fear that instead of prioritizing reforms that benefit the people, some politicians may push changes that serve their personal or political interests. Without transparency and genuine public participation, charter change may not lead to meaningful improvements.Furthermore, the real issue is not the constitution itself, but the poor enforcement of laws and governance. The Philippines already has policies that, if properly implemented, can improve the economy, justice system, and governance. Instead of changing the constitution, the government should focus on enforcing anti-corruption measures, improving public services, and strengthening institutions. While some reforms may be beneficial in the future, the current push for charter change raises too many risks. Rather than making drastic amendments, the government should focus on properly implementing existing laws and ensuring good governance. The people must remain vigilant in protecting democracy and ensuring that any constitutional changes truly serve the nation’s best interests.
