1. Hair StructureA. Hair Shaft (Visible part above the skin) The hair shaft is the part of the hair that extends above the skin’s surface. It is made up of keratin, a protein that gives hair strength and structure. It has three layersCuticle – The outermost layer made of overlapping scales that protect the hair. Cortex – The middle layer containing keratin fibers and melanin, which gives hair its color. Medulla – The innermost, soft core (not always present in fine hair). B. Hair Root (Below the skin) The hair root is inside the hair follicle in the dermis (skin layer). It consists of Hair follicle – The tunnel-like structure that houses the root and provides nutrients. Hair bul* – The base of the follicle, where hair growth starts. Dermal papilla – Contains blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients to the growing hair. 2. Associated Structures Sebaceous glands – Produce sebum (oil) to keep hair moisturized. Arrector pili muscle – Small muscle that contracts to make hair stand (goosebumps).
