Elements are the simplest pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. They are the building blocks of all matter. Each element is made up of only one type of atom. For example, hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), and carbon (C) are all elements. Compounds are substances formed when two or more different elements combine chemically in a fixed ratio. They have properties that are different from the elements that make them up. For example, water (H₂O) is a compound formed by the chemical combination of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.
