Rift valleys are formed when tectonic plates move apart, or diverge. This movement causes the Earth's crust to stretch and thin, eventually leading to the formation of a crack in the Earth's surface. As the plates continue to move apart, the crack widens and deepens, forming a rift valley. Over millions of years, the rift valley will continue to widen and deepen until it eventually becomes so wide that it separates the land on either side. This process is called continental rifting. The land on either side of the rift valley will then move apart, forming a new ocean basin. Examples of continental rifting: - The East African Rift Valley- The Red Sea- The Gulf of Aden These are all examples of places where continental rifting is occurring. In the future, these rift valleys will eventually become new ocean basins.
