One skill that I and many other teenagers lack is media and digital literacy. Many teenagers are very good at navigating social media platforms but cannot filter right from wrong information. Due to convenience, many teens and even some adults, would turn to social media platforms for information instead of using search engines to search the web for reliable sources. They also lack deeper digital skills, like coding, data analysis, or understanding online ethics.To improve on this weakness, we must adhere to a strict schedule in accessing social media. An hour or less each day is enough time for us not to be bombarded with useless information. This will help with overexposure and our attention spans. Learning how to navigate the web and honing critical thinking skills will help us develop the skill of discerning what is right and what is misinformation.We can take online courses in coding, digital tools, and cybersecurity, as well as practice responsible and critical use of online information. If we ever feel the itch to start doom scrolling, we can divert our attention to an offline hobby such as reading novels and short stories, developing artistic skills, handicrafts, and maybe even spending more quality time with friends and families.
